Lippulaiva shopping center to expand with metro station

Lippulaiva, in Espoonlahti neighbourhood in Espoo in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area is set for its next phase as Citycon Finland Oy and Lehto Group Oyj have signed a preliminary agreement on a development project.

Lippulaiva’s strength today is the daily shopping of Espoonlahti’s residents, located at a central traffic hub, right next to Länsiväylä. The second phase of the west metro is set for completion in 2020, and the aim is to have the renewed Lippulaiva shopping centre and the apartments completed by then.

The new Espoonlahti metro station, which is part of the Länsimetro western metro extension, will be connected to Lippulaiva, together with a feeder traffic terminal, a bus terminal, an underground parking facility and apartments. Around 550 apartments and 1,400 parking spaces will also be built next to Lippulaiva.

“Our aim is to build something that will serve the local residents, with a focus on excellent daily goods shops, versatile public and private services and an extensive range of restaurants. Public transport will be integrated as part of the bigger picture,” says Citycon Project Development Director Heikki Alén.

”Lehto Oy, which is part of the Lehto Group, will deliver the turn-key project,” says Chief Business Officer Jaakko Heikkilä.

”The company has previously built several shopping centres, but Lippulaiva is the largest contract for our company,” Jaakko Heikkilä says.

The project requires that temporary facilities be set up to house some of the shops in the shopping centre. The temporary business facilities, named Pikkulaiva, will stand at around 10,000 m2 in size.

“The aim is to secure everyday services for local residents and uninterrupted business for tenants during the Lippulaiva project,” says Heikki Alén.

The final agreement on the contract is set to early autumn 2016.
