Stockholm social supermarket destroyed in fire

Sweden’s first social supermarket, located in Rågsved south of Stockholm, caught fire Wednesday morning and could not be saved.

According to Swedish tabloid Aftonbladet who’s published a film from the scene, police and fire brigade was alerted 05 o’clock as one person had seen “flames beat out the roof” of the store.

”The fire department will let it burn down,” said Mats Almquist, officers of the police communications center.

The social supermarket, named Matmissionen, was operated by Stockholm City mission and supported by Axfood and a number of grocery suppliers and has only been open since December.

”The store is needed in society today, and now when it burned down we can not conduct our business there. Our customers, the economically disadvantaged, have nowhere to buy inexpensive food now. This will be a major setback in their economy,” says Marika Hjelm Siegwald, communications director at the City Mission.

The aim is to open a new business again.

Police is launching an investigation into suspected arson.
