Swedish retail sales up 5.1% in January

The retail trade sales volume in Sweden increased by 5.1 percent in January compared to the same month last year. Retail sales for consumables increased by 2.1 percent while retail sales for durables increased by 7.7 percent, working day adjusted.

The turnover for retail trade measured in current prices increased by 4.5 percent from January 2014 to January 2015. Retail trade for consumables (such as goods sold in department stores and specialised grocery stores) showed an increase of 3.8 percent while durables (such as clothing stores, furniture stores, second-hand goods stores and mail order houses) increased by 5.2 percent.

”The furniture trade was the sub-sector within durables which performed best during January. Despite a relatively strong sales month in January 2014, the furniture trade showed a growth of 12.1 percent in 2015. Clothing also showed a strong growth rate during the month of January, partly explained by a strong sales period. Books had a tougher sales month and the turnover decreased by more than 9 percent in January,” is the comment from HUI Research.

The retail trade sales volume increased by 1.2 percent between December 2014 and January 2015. During the last three-month period (November through January), the sales volume increased by 1.1 percent compared to the previous three-month period (August through October). Both of these figures are working day adjusted and seasonally adjusted.

”Consumer confidence has decreased during the past two months and landed at 97.4 in February, i.e. below the historic average. However, consumer confidence towards one’s own economy is more optimistic now compared to the previous month, which may benefit the retail sector. Retailers are more optimistic and the confidence among retail companies increased from 108 to 108.5 between January and February 2015,” writes HUI Research.

HUI’s forecast for 2015 is a growth of 3 percent.
